Ram Navami: Significance, Traditions & How to Celebrate at Home

Ram Navami is one of the most auspicious Hindu festivals celebrated for centuries. It marks the birth of Lord Ram, the seventh incarnation of Bhagwan Vishnu. This holy festival is celebrated by Hindus across different parts of India and around the world.

This year, Ram Navami will be observed on 26th March.

Why do we celebrate Ram Navami?

The story of Lord Ram’s birth begins with King Dashrath, the emperor of Ayodhya, who wanted a son to carry forward his lineage and serve as an heir to continue his legacy. On the advice of Rishi Vashista, he performed a sacred fire ritual (Putrakameshti Yagna) to get a son. Pleased with the ritual, Lord Vishnu bestowed divine kheer (payasam) to King Dasharatha. After drinking the divine kheer, his wives gave birth to four sons.

Queen Kaushalya gave birth to Lord Ram on the ninth day of the Hindu calendar month, Chaitra, in the auspicious Punarvasu Nakshatra. Lord Ram is considered an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and is the central figure of the epic Ramayana. He defeated Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, and restored Dharma (righteousness) on earth. According to the Valmiki Ramayana, Ravana was blessed with invincibility, and only a human could defeat him, necessitating the birth of Bhagwan Vishnu in human form. The birth of Lord Ram symbolizes the victory of good over evil, and Ram Navami is celebrated every year. Beyond battle, Ram is revered as the ideal in every role: son, husband, king, and friend, and is known as Maryada Purushottam, the perfect man. His life continues to inspire people to follow the path of dharma and the virtues of life.
